New Hampshire Celebrates Juneteenth with a Grand Dance Event

Celebrating Juneteenth: Honoring History and Building Community in New Hampshire

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – The Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire is set to culminate its series of Juneteenth celebrations with a vibrant community dance and the rededication of the African Burying Ground Memorial Park on Thursday. These events, part of a month-long observance, serve to honor June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers first informed enslaved Black people in Texas of their freedom.

Executive Director JerriAnne Boggis emphasized the need to reshape narratives surrounding the nation’s founding, drawing attention to the complex histories of its architects, many of whom held people in bondage. “What would the story look like if told from the perspective of Black descendants?” she questioned.

Although Juneteenth has received greater recognition since it was declared a federal holiday by former President Joe Biden in 2021, the current political landscape remains contentious. As discussions around diversity and inclusion initiatives face challenges, Boggis expressed concern about New Hampshire’s lack of a permanent Juneteenth holiday.

Despite these hurdles, Boggis believes the celebrations provide an opportunity to foster understanding and unity. “Knowing the truth helps us navigate current issues,” she asserted. By combining education and celebration through music and communal gatherings, the events aim to strengthen community bonds and promote a deeper appreciation of African American history while addressing ongoing societal challenges.
