NH Healthy Climate: Strategies for Managing Extreme Heat in New Hampshire

NH Healthy Climate Urges Residents to Prepare for Summer Heat Waves

As New Hampshire braces for another sweltering summer, NH Healthy Climate is calling on residents to take proactive measures to combat rising temperatures intensified by climate change. Data shows that the frequency of heat waves has steadily increased since the 1960s, with the last decade marking the hottest years on record. Notably, Concord has averaged seven more extreme heat days annually, while Manchester faced a startling 14 consecutive days above 90°F in July 2024.

Vulnerable groups, including outdoor workers, infants, student athletes, and the elderly, are at particular risk during these heat waves. Dr. Robert Dewey, vice chair of the NH Healthy Climate board, stresses three essential precautions: schedule, shade, and hydration. "Plan errands and outdoor activities for the cooler early morning and evening hours," he advises. Utilizing shaded areas can significantly alleviate heat, while adequate hydration—encouraged to be at least one glass of water per hour—is vital.

In anticipation of extreme temperatures, the state and various municipalities will establish cooling centers. Residents are advised to call 211 for the latest updates on locations and availability. NH Healthy Climate, a coalition of healthcare professionals, aims to educate the public on the health impacts of climate change. For more information, visit nhclimatehealth.org.

Stay safe and informed this summer as New Hampshire continues to confront the realities of rising climate temperatures.
