A potential meteorite was observed streaking across the sky in the Southeastern U.S. on Thursday, prompting numerous reports of a fireball shortly before noon. The National Weather Service office in Charleston indicated that satellite-based lightning detection revealed a streak in a cloud-free sky over the NC/VA border, specifically over Gasbury, VA, between 11:51 and 11:56 a.m. Videos shared on social media captured the fireball descending into a wooded area in South Carolina shortly after its appearance.
One notable video posted by Kathryn Farr, taken from her car’s dashcam while driving south on Interstate 85 toward Anderson, South Carolina, showed the event at around 12:25 p.m. She remarked on Facebook about the rarity of such sightings. Additional footage from Andrew Corley Road in Lexington depicted the meteorite with a bright white light and an orange flame tail before disappearing into the woods.
The Newton County sheriff’s office in Georgia informed residents that the fireball was likely a meteor and suggested that more could be on the way. They noted an increase in reports from inhabitants in and around Covington but at that time lacked specific details regarding the meteor’s landing location. The overall excitement surrounding this sighting reflects the public’s fascination with rare astronomical events and the increasing use of technology to document such occurrences.
