Authorities Investigate Drowning Incident at Lake Winnipesaukee
Gilford, N.H. — A tragic drowning incident occurred at Lake Winnipesaukee on Friday, claiming the life of a 17-year-old boy. According to the New Hampshire State Police, the boy entered the water around 12:48 p.m. in an attempt to retrieve a bag that had fallen off a boat. The incident unfolded in the Broads area, close to Diamond and Rattlesnake Islands.
Emergency responders were alerted via a 911 call and quickly arrived to find three women on the boat. Witnesses reported the boy struggling in the choppy waters, likely exacerbated by strong winds. He submerged and did not resurface, prompting an immediate search operation.
Marine patrol teams, alongside the fire departments from Gilford and Alton, began searching for the boy but initially were unsuccessful. After hours of searching, a dive team located his body at approximately 7:02 p.m.
An autopsy has been scheduled, and authorities have confirmed that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning is ongoing. "The initial investigation indicates this was a drowning," stated a police spokesperson. They are encouraging anyone who may have information relevant to the case to contact Sgt.
