New Hampshire Delegation Questions Trump’s Authority for Iran Strikes
In the wake of the recent U.S. military strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, New Hampshire’s congressional delegation is demanding clarity regarding the intelligence that prompted the operations and the constitutional legitimacy of President Trump’s unilateral decision. On Saturday, the U.S. deployed stealth bombers and a submarine against three Iranian sites, raising alarm among lawmakers about the potential escalation into conflict.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the leading Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, emphasized the need for careful deliberation, urging Trump to "de-escalate" tensions and expressing concern for the 40,000 American service members in the region. Shaheen called for more transparency from the administration regarding the intelligence that led to the decision.
Democrat Senator Maggie Hassan echoed these sentiments, stressing Congress’s constitutional role in declaring war. She insisted that lawmakers need comprehensive information about Iran’s nuclear capabilities to appropriately address national security concerns.
Both of the state’s congressional representatives, Chris Pappas and Maggie Goodlander, voiced support for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, while raising questions about the effectiveness of abandoning previous diplomatic efforts. Goodlander, a veteran, has joined other congressional veterans in advocating for a vote to authorize the president’s military actions, highlighting worries about the risks and costs of military engagement.
