Technologies Available to Eliminate PFAS: Could They Benefit Cadillac? | News

Cadillac Explores Innovative Solutions for PFAS Water Contamination

Cadillac, MI — In recent years, several companies have emerged with technologies designed to combat PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contamination in drinking water and wastewater. Among them is Enspired Solutions, a Michigan-based firm whose groundbreaking product, the PFASigator, employs a unique chemical blend activated by ultraviolet light to convert harmful PFAS into harmless byproducts like water and carbon compounds. This technology has garnered accolades from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and has been utilized by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Meng Wang, co-founder of Enspired Solutions, discussed the effectiveness of the PFASigator at high concentrations. For lower levels detected in Cadillac, partnering with technologies like foam fractionation and membrane filtration is advised. Foam fractionation involves using bubbles to collect PFAS, which can then be destroyed by the PFASigator.

North Carolina’s Invicta Water also provides integrated PFAS capture and destruction technologies. Their patent-pending foam fractionation method removes PFAS down to parts per quadrillion and has been implemented in multiple utilities across the southeastern U.S. Invicta’s system costs about $1.50 per gallon, making it a more affordable alternative compared to traditional granular activated carbon methods.

While Cadillac’s drinking water remains uncontaminated, there are concerns regarding detected PFAS levels in water discharged into the Clam River. Director of Utilities Jeffrey Dietlin emphasized the financial constraints of adopting these technologies, as implementing such solutions could require significant rate increases for residents.

Environmental activists have called for action, urging the city to investigate these technologies, highlighting the ongoing struggles municipalities face regarding PFAS remediation and the importance of balancing fiscal responsibility with public health.
