Keene, New Hampshire Celebrates 30th Anniversary of "Jumanji"

KEENE, NH — The beloved classic film "Jumanji," starring Robin Williams, is celebrating its 30th anniversary, and the small city of Keene is embracing its historic connection to the movie. Nearly 125 locals, including Madeline Murphy, who recalls her days as an extra running from imaginary elephants, remember filming in Central Square during the fall of 1994. After a grueling day, she received a check for $60.47 and a brief moment of screen time.

Keene is marking the occasion with a series of events, including a “Rhino Rumble Road Race,” where runners clad in inflatable animal costumes raced around the square. Additional festivities include a parade, scavenger hunt, and a cast party, highlighting the city’s unique role in the film.

The movie, based on Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 book, depicts the fictional town of Brantford, NH, and features scenes shot in both fall and spring. Dow Griffith, the veteran location manager, credited his coffee cravings for selecting Keene as the perfect spot after discovering its charm.

Local residents fondly recall their interactions with Williams, who engaged with fans during filming, including receiving the key to the city. In honor of Williams and former Keene police officer Joe Collins, festival organizers plan discussions on mental health and suicide prevention.

As the community celebrates the film’s legacy, Murphy reflects on the lasting impact of "Jumanji," which continues to resonate with audiences today.
