Tragic Drowning Incident on Lake Winnipesaukee Claims Teen’s Life
GILFORD, New Hampshire — New Hampshire Marine Patrol has confirmed the recovery of a 17-year-old boy’s body following a tragic drowning incident on Lake Winnipesaukee on Friday. Authorities were alerted at 12:48 p.m. after the teen entered the water near the "Broads," between Diamond and Rattlesnake Islands, in an effort to retrieve a bag that had fallen overboard. Witnesses, including three women on a nearby boat, reported that the boy appeared to struggle due to challenging water conditions exacerbated by strong winds.
Following the 911 call, Marine Patrol officers swiftly mobilized, and emergency crews from the Gilford and Alton Fire Departments joined in the search effort. Despite their efforts, it was not until 7:02 p.m. that the New Hampshire Fish and Game Dive Unit successfully located the teenager’s body.
The identity of the victim has not been disclosed, and an autopsy is scheduled to provide further information. Authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident, treating it as a drowning. They encourage anyone with information to contact Sgt. Seth Alie at Marine Patrol.
