The Incredible Escape of the Sole Survivor from the Air India Crash

Viswashkumar and his brother had been in India for eight to nine months when he was involved in a tragic plane crash while returning to London. He recounted to Reuters how, just a minute after takeoff, the aircraft felt like it stalled before crashing with force into a building. He was seated on a side of the plane that landed on the ground floor of a hostel. After seeing an opening when the door broke, he managed to escape through a small space, while the opposite side was obstructed by a wall, making it impossible for others to exit. Tragically, he witnessed the deaths of the air hostess and other passengers. Viswashkumar suffered burns on his left hand and was taken to a hospital where he is recovering, although he remains psychologically affected by the experience.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited him in the hospital, and Viswashkumar described his survival as a miracle. His brother in the UK echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude for Viswashkumar’s survival but lamenting the fate of their third brother, who was also on the flight. The crash involved 230 passengers and 12 crew members, with a devastating total of 241 fatalities. Among those on board were predominantly Indian nationals, along with British, Canadian, and Portuguese citizens. Viswashkumar’s story highlights not only a miraculous escape but also the deep emotional toll of such a catastrophic event.
