Fraud Prevention Advocates Host Technology Recycling Event in Brainerd

Brainerd Lakes Credit Unions Unite Against Fraud with Tech Recycling Event

In a proactive effort to combat financial fraud, five Brainerd Lakes Area credit unions have formed a coalition known as the Financial Fraud Fighters. This week, the group organized a successful tech recycling event aimed at encouraging community members to safely dispose of outdated technology, thereby preventing sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands.

The event, held Tuesday morning, focused on collecting a variety of electronic devices, including computers, cell phones, and tablets. All donated items will be handed over to PCs for People, an organization dedicated to ensuring that personal information is thoroughly wiped from devices before they are redistributed to those in need.

"We’re addressing the issue of technology fraud," said Rick Kelm, a volunteer with the Financial Fraud Fighters. "By collecting old technology, we’re helping to safeguard people’s information." Kelm emphasized the importance of responsible disposal in today’s digital age, where leftover data on discarded devices can pose significant security risks.

This year marked the second annual tech recycling event hosted by the coalition. Notably, by opening donations to the general public, participation surged dramatically, leading to more than triple the donations compared to last year.

The Financial Fraud Fighters’ initiative reflects a growing commitment within the community to promote cybersecurity and support local residents. By blending eco-conscious practices with fraud prevention efforts, the coalition not only diverts electronic waste from landfills but also serves those who may lack access to technology in a world increasingly reliant on digital communication.

As the event concluded, organizers expressed gratitude for the community’s overwhelming support and reiterated their dedication to fostering a safer financial environment.
