Charlestown Cold Case Reopened After 57 Years of Disappearance

New Hampshire Authorities Reopen Cold Case of Murdered Teen Joanne Dunham

June 11, 2023 — Charlestown, NH

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s office has announced the reopening of the cold case regarding the murder of 15-year-old Joanne Dunham, who was found dead in Unity over 57 years ago. Dunham vanished on June 11, 1968, after leaving her mobile home to catch the school bus, with her body discovered the following day in a remote area.

Todd Flanagan, who is leading the renewed investigation, emphasized the importance of honoring Dunham’s memory and supporting her family. “This case is not just about solving a crime,” he stated. Investigators will re-examine existing evidence, conduct new interviews, and follow up on fresh leads. While a spokesperson mentioned that they are exploring new information, specific details about potential DNA evidence remain undisclosed.

An autopsy from the time indicated that Dunham died from asphyxiation. Recently, authorities marked her unmarked gravesite at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Claremont with a new headstone, funded partly by a state victim assistance program. The inscription reads, “Taken too soon, loved forever.”

The Attorney General’s office urges anyone with information related to Dunham’s murder to contact them at (800) 525-5555 or via email at coldcaseunit@dos.nh.gov. The hopes of her family and the community now lie in the possibility of new breakthroughs in this tragic case.
