Press Release: Researchers Warn AI’s Productivity Gains May Lead to Increased Burnout
A recent study published in the International Journal of Information Management has raised concerns regarding the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on workplace dynamics. While organizations tout AI as a tool for enhancing productivity, researchers argue that its implementation may come at a significant cost—namely, "AI technostress."
The study indicates that as employees adapt to AI technologies, many are facing heightened demands that can exacerbate stress and lead to burnout. Researchers found that while AI can streamline workflows, it often introduces new pressures, including cognitive overload and a blurred line between work and personal life. This phenomenon, described as technostress, results in an expectation for employees to deliver more with less support.
Despite AI’s potential to improve productivity and job satisfaction, findings reveal a discouraging trend: 77% of employees using AI report that these tools have added to their workload rather than alleviating it. A staggering 71% of full-time employees say they feel burned out, with 65% indicating they struggle to meet growing demands from employers.
Supporting this study, an article from The New York Times highlights the experiences of Amazon software developers compelled to use AI tools, who report increased pace and diminished time for thought. Dr. Lawrence Katz from Harvard University noted that these demands may create a troubling speed-up for knowledge workers.
Additionally, a report from Upwork reveals that 96% of C-suite leaders anticipate productivity improvements from AI, yet nearly half of employees feel uninformed about how to achieve these outcomes.
The researchers urge organizations to rethink their approach to AI integration, suggesting a balance between traditional and innovative talent management practices. As the landscape of work continues to evolve with AI, the focus must shift towards supporting employees to fully realize the potential benefits of these technologies without sacrificing their well-being.
