Southern Baptists Address Pornography, Sports Betting, Same-Sex Marriage, and Deliberate Childlessness

This week, Southern Baptists are convening in Dallas, where they will address several resolutions aimed at reinforcing conservative values, including calls for a legal prohibition on pornography and a reversal of the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling. The proposed resolutions advocate for laws on gender, marriage, and family that they claim align with what they perceive as the biblically defined order of creation. Additionally, there are suggestions to curtail sports betting and promote policies that encourage childbearing.

As the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S., the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) will also grapple with internal controversies, including a potential ban on churches with women pastors and debates over the funding of its public policy arm, which critics argue has been ineffective in its anti-abortion efforts without supporting criminal charges against women who seek abortions.

This meeting occurs 40 years after a significant factional struggle within the SBC, which led to a conservative takeover of the convention. While attendance is expected to be much lower than in 1985, the historical impact of that event lingers.

Proposed resolutions emphasize the need for lawmakers to reflect what the SBC considers divinely ordained truths regarding marriage and human life, a stance some view as theocratic. Despite strong backing for these resolutions, there are concerns about the denomination’s alignment with broader political agendas, particularly under the leadership of figures like House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Discussions also touch on demographic challenges, with a declining membership amidst recent increases in baptism figures. The SBC’s future direction appears set against a backdrop of an escalating culture war, as it seeks to maintain its influence amid societal changes.
