New Hampshire National Guard Welcomes New Command Sergeant Major
PEMBROKE, N.H. — On June 8, 2025, Command Sgt. Maj. William Ferland officially passed the reins of the New Hampshire National Guard (NHNG) to Command Sgt. Maj. Caleb Smith during a ceremony at the Edward Cross Training Complex. Ferland, who retires after over 40 years of dedicated service, received the Legion of Merit for his contributions to the NHNG which include deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Spartan Shield.
During his tenure, Ferland served as the 13th State Command Sergeant Major and played a crucial role in the readiness, welfare, and education of NHNG soldiers. In his farewell address, he reflected on the enduring values of the Army, stating, “What hasn’t changed is the grit, courage and relentless drive to complete the mission.” He expressed gratitude towards his colleagues and emphasized the significance of camaraderie and leadership development.
Taking over as the 14th Command Sergeant Major, Smith transitioned from his previous role in the 54th Troop Command, where he enhanced operations and soldier readiness over his 25-year career. Smith, a veteran of multiple deployments, including Operation Enduring Freedom, expressed appreciation for the support that shaped his journey, stating, “You matter and you make a difference.”
Both leaders exemplified the commitment of the NHNG to uphold the highest standards of service and support for those who serve.
