AI Impact on Employment: A Candid Warning from Klarna CEO
In a recent interview on The Times Tech podcast, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, CEO of Klarna, expressed concerns about artificial intelligence’s impending ramifications on white-collar jobs. He suggested that the rapid advancement of AI technology could lead to a recession in the short term, stating, "Unfortunately, I don’t see how we could avoid that."
Siemiatkowski highlighted the significant efficiency gains achieved through AI at Klarna, where staff numbers fell from 5,500 to about 3,000 in two years. Notably, the company’s OpenAI-powered assistant has replaced the work of approximately 700 customer service agents, showcasing the drastic changes that AI integration can bring. He admitted, however, that the company enacted a hiring freeze last year in a bid to pivot toward technology over manpower.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, predicted that AI could eliminate up to 50% of entry-level white-collar positions within five years, emphasizing the industry’s responsibility to confront this reality openly.
