Executive Councilor Faces Financial Scrutiny Amid Campaign Spending Concerns
Concord, NH – Executive Councilor Karen Liot Hill, who emphasizes her role as the "top Democrat in state government," has recently been labeled a "deadbeat" by a New Hampshire court due to her failure to repay over $4,200 in credit card debt. This ruling stems from court records indicating that Liot Hill ceased payments just as she began her campaign for executive council, without responding to a February complaint from Lebanon District Court.
Liot Hill, a long-serving Lebanon city councilor, is already under investigation by the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Election Law Unit for questionable spending on campaign-related expenses. Reports reveal that her campaign expenditures included personal items such as a $190 ferry ride to the Hamptons, car registration fees of $181, and a $250 haircut. Adding to the scrutiny are two checks, totaling $1,350, linked to legal issues, including a violation for driving with a suspended license and a debt collection case.
Despite these revelations, Liot Hill asserts her commitment to Democratic values and attempts to engage with constituents. In a recent interview, she expressed aspirations for higher office, stating, “never say never” in regard to a gubernatorial or congressional run. However, Republican critics, like State Senator Dan Innis, question her financial management, suggesting someone with personal finance issues should not oversee state funds.
Liot Hill’s campaign finance practices have attracted ongoing media attention. Following initial scrutiny, she amended her filings to address discrepancies, including reassessing two checks as reimbursements for legitimate expenses. Future plans include seeking reelection in 2026, with her campaign organization registering again under the same treasurer as before.
