New Hampshire Launches Creative Competition for Marriage Certificate Design
In a charming initiative to revive the romance of marriage paperwork, New Hampshire invites residents to participate in a competition to design a new marriage certificate. The concept originated from State Registrar Kristin Martino, who stumbled upon a beautifully illustrated marriage certificate from 1886 while shopping for antiques. Struck by its intricate artwork, she sought to provide newlyweds with a more meaningful keepsake than the standard 8.5 x 11 state-issued document.
Eligible participants, aged 18 and older, can submit their designs via the Secretary of State website until September 5. The winning design will be announced shortly thereafter. Martino emphasizes that submissions should be non-religious and showcase "the beauty of New Hampshire," particularly as the state is a sought-after wedding destination during the summer months.
While couples will still receive the traditional marriage license, the new heirloom certificate will be available for purchase at $25 starting next year. Each certificate will come with an accompanying artist statement, adding a personal touch to this cherished memento.
Martino reflects on the importance of celebrating such milestones with beautiful artifacts, noting that the initiative aims to enhance the sentimental value of marriage certificates, turning them into more than just legal documents. As interest grows, New Hampshire hopes to create a beloved new tradition that honors the love and commitment of its couples.
