CONCORD, N.H. – The trial of political consultant Steven Kramer commenced Thursday in Belknap County Superior Court, focusing on his use of AI to create robocalls that mimicked former President Joe Biden just days before New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary. Kramer faces multiple felony charges, including voter suppression and impersonating a candidate, potentially resulting in decades of prison time if convicted.
Prosecutors allege that the AI-generated calls, which featured a voice resembling Biden’s, misled voters by suggesting that participation in the January 23, 2024 primary would inhibit their ability to vote in November. “Your votes make a difference in November, not this Tuesday,” the calls stated. Assistant Attorney General Brendan O’Donnell described the situation as a “brazen attack” on the electoral process.
Kramer counters that his intent was to highlight the dangers of AI misuse rather than to influence the election. He hired a magician to create the voice for $150, claiming his actions served a greater purpose for democracy.
The defense also argued that the calls merely expressed Kramer’s opinion regarding the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) involvement in New Hampshire’s primary and asserted that Kramer did not impersonate a candidate since Biden’s name was not explicitly mentioned. Despite operational challenges presented by DNC decisions, jurors were instructed to regard the primary as legally valid per state laws.
