Press Release: Celebrating a Cozy Retreat in the Woods
Renowned interior designer Meg McSherry has skillfully transformed her New Hampshire getaway into a nostalgic "little cottage in the woods," blending vintage charm with modern comfort. “I want it to feel familiar, like you’ve been here before,” McSherry says, emphasizing her desire for a space where she can truly relax.
Antique pieces are central to the home’s design, enhancing its lived-in aesthetic. “To me, old is comforting,” she explains, pointing to the cozy Mulberry wool-plaid fabric on the living room sofa, ideal for both summer and winter settings. McSherry loves muted colors that evoke a sense of history—"dirty, faded, and worn" are words she embraces.
Visitors are welcomed through a vibrant mustard door leading to a beautiful vintage Turkish rug and eye-catching artwork, including a mid-century tapestry depicting Aztec dancers. This playful touch balances familiarity with whimsy. Notably, McSherry has taken risks with color, painting basement stairs a striking "dirty salmon" to symbolize her departure from traditional aesthetics.
The kitchen features Benjamin Moore’s Caponata, a dark plum, seamlessly paired with an ivory wall, while custom elements like a banquette and handmade table add character without clutter. Noteworthy artworks, including pieces by Martha’s Vineyard artist Avery Schuster Bramhall, personalize the space with family motifs.
With dusty mauve tones in the primary bedroom and rich textures throughout, McSherry’s home encapsulates her vision of being a relaxed, stylish version of herself. “This house shows how I can do that,” she affirms, embodying the essence of comfort and creativity in her whimsical yet grounded design.
