Trump Unveils New Travel Restrictions Affecting 19 Countries, Including 12 Full Bans

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Wednesday imposing a travel ban on nationals from twelve countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti, and the Republic of Congo. This measure aims to enhance national security and builds on a controversial policy from his first term. In his proclamation, Trump instructed the Secretary of State, along with other key officials, to identify countries with insufficient vetting and screening processes, prompting a full or partial suspension of admissions from those nations.

The specific countries affected by the ban are Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. The administration cited reasons such as these countries’ refusals to accept the return of their citizens and high rates of visa overstays, which were deemed “unacceptable” and indicative of a disregard for U.S. immigration laws. Countries like Sudan, Yemen, and Somalia were included due to inadequate screening and vetting measures.

In addition to the outright bans, seven other countries—Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela—were subjected to partial travel restrictions, where admissions under certain visa programs were suspended, but an outright ban was not imposed.

These travel restrictions are scheduled to take effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Monday, reinforcing Trump’s stance on immigration and national security as a priority of his administration. This latest move continues the ongoing debate over immigration policies and their implications for international relations and human rights.
