Two Additional NH Democrats Entering or Considering a Run in the 1st Congressional District Primary

New Candidates Enter New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District Race

Hampton select board member Carleigh Beriont and Dover State Rep. Alice Wade have officially joined the Democratic primary for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, adding new dynamics to an already competitive field.

Beriont, who has positioned herself as a political outsider, expressed her motivations: “I’m running for Congress because — Why not? Regular people deserve a seat at the table, too.” At 36, Beriont has a distinguished academic background, holding a doctorate from Harvard and teaching at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She has been actively involved in efforts to unionize graduate student workers at her alma mater and focuses her research on public policy, religion, and history.

Wade, a 23-year-old aerospace engineer serving her first term in Concord, has also launched an exploratory committee for her Congressional bid. Emphasizing her outsider status, she stated, “People are hungry for something different, not more consultant packaged talking points but real leadership grounded in lived experience.”

The 1st District race has opened up following four-term U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas’s decision to pursue the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. Alongside Beriont and Wade, prominent Democratic contenders include Stefany Shaheen, a former city councilor and daughter of Sen. Shaheen, and Maura Sullivan, the vice chair of the state Democratic Party.

As the primary approaches, several Republicans are also eyeing the seat, including businessman Chris Bright and Manchester Alderman Joe Kelly Levasseur, both of whom previously ran for office. The burgeoning Democratic field reflects a growing demand for diverse leadership in the district, highlighting a potential shift in political dynamics.
