Stefany Shaheen Launches Congressional Bid, Drawing on Personal Experience
Former Portsmouth city councilor Stefany Shaheen, the daughter of U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, has officially launched her campaign for the 1st Congressional District. The announcement was made through a heartfelt video recorded in her home kitchen, highlighting her personal connection to health issues.
Shaheen emphasized the challenges of raising a child with Type 1 diabetes, an experience that inspired her to co-found a business focused on providing clinical and nutritional support for those with chronic conditions. Additionally, she authored a book detailing her daughter’s journey and their family’s innovative approach, including the use of a dog trained to detect blood sugar fluctuations.
In her campaign announcement, Shaheen expressed her commitment to medical research and innovation, underscoring her determination to advocate for better healthcare policies. She criticized former President Donald Trump for making funding cuts that she claims have driven top scientists away and targeted Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. for promoting conspiracy theories.
“I am going to fight, and believe me, I know how,” Shaheen declared, asserting that no one fights harder than a mother when it comes to their children’s wellbeing. At 51, she brings a wealth of community experience to her candidacy, having served on the city’s Police Commission and coached high school volleyball. Currently, she holds the position of chief strategy officer for ARMI, a biomanufacturing initiative in Manchester.
Shaheen enters a competitive primary alongside Maura Sullivan, the state Democratic party Vice Chair. The seat is open following Congressman Chris Pappas’s decision not to seek re-election to pursue his mother’s Senate seat, as Jeanne Shaheen prepares for retirement.
As the race unfolds, Shaheen is poised to become a significant contender in New Hampshire politics.
