FDA Chief Advises Pregnant Women to Consult Doctors About Covid Vaccine Decisions

On Wednesday, FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary stated that decisions regarding COVID vaccination for pregnant women should be made in consultation with their doctors, rather than guided by federal recommendations. This comment followed Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s announcement that revoked CDC recommendations for COVID vaccinations for pregnant women and healthy children, citing mixed data on vaccine efficacy in this group. However, many vaccine experts dispute this assertion, emphasizing that extensive studies show the benefits of the vaccine in protecting both pregnant women—as they face higher risks from COVID—and their infants.

Dr. Jesse Goodman, an infectious disease expert, noted the lack of mixed data and pointed out that vaccination not only protects mothers but also provides immunity to infants under six months. Similarly, Dr. Paul Offit highlighted that pregnant women are significantly more susceptible to severe outcomes from COVID. Concerns have arisen about the CDC’s usual consultative processes being bypassed in this decision, a departure from established practices, particularly since there is currently no CDC director.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists expressed disappointment with the decision, stressing the dangers of COVID during pregnancy and the reliance on maternal antibodies for infant protection. The CDC’s recommendations influence which vaccines are covered by insurance, making this decision particularly impactful. While Makary has emphasized the need for transparent review of data submitted to the FDA, he has not confirmed whether discussions involved CDC representatives or when further data may be made public. The CDC’s website had yet to reflect the new guidance following this announcement, leaving uncertainty regarding vaccination protocols for pregnant women.
