Pleasant Weather Ahead with Caution on NH Water Temperatures: Forecasters Advise

Special Weather Advisory Issued for New Hampshire’s Warm Up

CONCORD, NH — As temperatures rise in New Hampshire, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a “special weather statement” highlighting the risks associated with cold water temperatures in the state’s water bodies. While many residents welcome the warm weather, the NWS cautions that temperatures in local lakes and rivers remain dangerously low, averaging in the lower to mid-50s.

The alert emphasizes how quickly hypothermia can set in for individuals immersed in water under 60 degrees. Those engaging in outdoor activities, such as kayaking or canoeing, should exercise extreme caution and always wear life jackets. The U.S. Coast Guard reports that cold water can inhibit a submerged person’s motor skills within minutes, complicating rescue efforts.

Additionally, melting snow and recent rainfall have led to swift water currents in rivers, increasing the risk of overturned vessels. As temperatures reach highs in the upper 70s throughout the week, with sunny skies in Concord and Nashua, residents are reminded to stay vigilant. Rain is forecasted to return Thursday, lowering temperatures into the mid-50s.
