New Hampshire Mother Reaches Settlement in Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against State

New Hampshire Settles $2.25 Million Lawsuit in Harmony Montgomery Case

Concord, NH – The state of New Hampshire has agreed to pay $2.25 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Crystal Sorey, mother of five-year-old Harmony Montgomery. Sorey’s lawsuit, initiated last September, claimed that the New Hampshire Division of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) failed to protect Harmony from foreseeable abuse after placing her with her father, Adam Montgomery, in 2019.

Sorey’s legal team highlighted multiple alarming reports regarding Harmony’s welfare after her placement with Montgomery, including an incident in July 2019 where she returned from Florida with a black eye. The court documents reveal a disturbing account where Adam allegedly left Harmony alone with a baby and responded violently when conflicts arose.

In addition to the physical abuse allegations, the lawsuit described the Montgomery home as bordering on uninhabitable conditions, raising serious concerns about the safety and care provided to Harmony.

Adam Montgomery was ultimately convicted of murdering Harmony and received a minimum prison sentence of 56 years. Under the terms of the settlement, the state does not admit any wrongdoing. New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella commented on the settlement, expressing hope that it may provide some closure for Sorey amid her profound loss.

This case reflects ongoing state scrutiny, as numerous reports of abuse within state-run juvenile detention centers have surfaced, prompting discussions about the protective measures in place for vulnerable children.
