One Dies in Sewage Boat Explosion on New York’s Hudson River

An explosion occurred Saturday on a boat transporting raw sewage, docked on the Hudson River in New York City, resulting in the death of a longtime city employee and injuries to another. The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. near the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant. A 59-year-old man, a dedicated 33-year city veteran from the Department of Environmental Protection, was found unconscious in the water and pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been disclosed, but Mayor Eric Adams expressed condolences, emphasizing the man’s commitment to public service.

A third worker on the city-owned Hunts Point vessel declined medical treatment. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that the explosion happened while the crew was engaged in activities involving fire or sparks. Although the cause is still under investigation, Mayor Adams indicated that there is no suspicion of criminal intent.

The blast resulted in raw sewage being spread across the boat’s deck, requiring firefighters and first responders to undergo decontamination procedures. Fortunately, the Department of Environmental Protection reported that there did not appear to be any environmental impacts following the explosion.

This tragic event highlights the risks faced by municipal workers and the importance of safety precautions when dealing with hazardous materials. The investigation continues to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
