Celebrating National Wine Day: A Toast to Black-Owned Wineries in America

As we raise a glass to National Wine Day on May 25, it’s important to acknowledge the rich tapestry of stories and voices that shape the American wine landscape, especially those of Black-owned wineries, which make up less than one percent of the nation’s 11,500 wineries. These establishments not only contribute to the economy—projecting a remarkable $75.27 billion value for the sector in 2024—but also weave in narratives of perseverance and cultural heritage.

Highlighting ten standout Black-owned wineries across the country reveals the diversity and richness of wine culture. Among them is Brown Estate in Napa Valley, California, famed for its Zinfandel and extensive winemaking experience, being the region’s first Black-owned estate winery. In Texas, Chapelton Vineyards offers luxurious tastings with a blend of international wines alongside their own creations.

The Purple Corkscrew in Georgia stands out for its vast selection of over 350 bottles and a welcoming ambiance that caters to all wine enthusiasts. Meanwhile, Ebony Vineyards in North Carolina serves as a cultural hub, melding premium wines with local heritage.

From Abbey Creek Vineyard in Oregon, where hip-hop meets winemaking, to Lashelle Wines in Washington, promoting diversity, each of these wineries offers a unique experience. Black Fire Winery in Michigan provides a family-friendly atmosphere with on-site production of wines and ciders, while Gotham Winery in New York is renowned for its innovative approach to classic varieties.

Lastly, Cyrenity Sips in Pennsylvania captivates with personalized labels tied to community stories, and Boyd Cru Wines in Maryland showcases sustainable practices as the state’s first Black-owned winery.

On this National Wine Day, we celebrate the contributions and stories of these remarkable wineries, inviting everyone to explore the exceptional wines and rich narratives they offer.
