Construction Halt at New Hampshire Hospital Raises Concerns
Concord, NH – The construction of a new forensic psychiatric hospital on Clinton Street has been unexpectedly halted due to “construction issues,” according to Governor Kelly Ayotte. Speaking at a news conference, Ayotte confirmed that the Department of Health and Human Services, along with the Attorney General’s office, is investigating the matter, although specific details remain undisclosed.
The project was initially reported to be on schedule for completion by late 2026 or early 2027, as stated by Charlie Arlinghaus, commissioner of the Department of Administrative Services. However, the current suspension of work raises doubts about meeting this timeline.
The new facility, a significant addition to New Hampshire’s mental health resources, will provide 24 beds within a 41,000-square-foot structure. It aims to serve defendants in the criminal justice system suffering from severe mental illnesses, as well as individuals deemed unfit for trial and those civilly committed to treatment. The building will feature enhanced safety protocols necessary for managing this vulnerable population.
This ambitious project, budgeted at $41.9 million, is being constructed by PC Construction based in South Burlington. The halt in construction raises concerns about the future of the facility and its anticipated impact on the state’s mental health services. The administration will continue to monitor the situation as investigations proceed.
