New Hampshire Kicks Off Memorial Day Weekend Travel Surge

Record Car Travel Expected This Memorial Day Weekend Amid Low Gas Prices

HOOKSETT, N.H. — AAA forecasts approximately 38.4 million Americans will travel by car this Memorial Day weekend, marking an increase of one million from 2022. Travel data analysis from INRIX suggests the most favorable driving conditions on Friday will be before 11 a.m., while heavy traffic is anticipated from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. For those journeying on Memorial Day, the worst travel times will be between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., with the best opportunity to hit the road before 2 p.m.

One significant factor driving this surge in car travel is the reduction in gas prices. As of Friday, New Hampshire’s average gas price stands at $2.91 per gallon, below the national average of $3.20. Experts from Gas Buddy predict that prices may continue to decrease through the summer, especially between Memorial Day and July 4. "We expect some of the lowest gas prices this summer to appear closer to Labor Day unless major hurricanes disrupt gasoline supply from refineries," noted Patrick De Haan, Gas Buddy’s head of petroleum analysis.

As the Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration anticipates approximately ten hurricanes, with three to five potentially becoming major storms. For those in New Hampshire, meteorologists predict scattered showers over the weekend, but no severe storms are expected, allowing for a pleasant Memorial Day getaway.
