Hamas Announces Release of Israeli-American Hostage Edan Alexander on Monday

Hamas announced on Monday the impending release of Edan Alexander, an Israeli-American hostage believed to be the last U.S. citizen held in Gaza. Hamas spokesperson Abu Obaida stated that the Al-Qassam Brigades decided to free Alexander as part of goodwill gestures aimed at achieving a ceasefire and facilitating aid to Gaza amid ongoing conflicts. The timing of the release coincides with President Donald Trump’s upcoming trip to the Middle East, which aims to promote ceasefire efforts in the region.

The Israeli government confirmed it would facilitate a safe corridor for Alexander’s release but noted it would not engage in ceasefire negotiations or release Palestinian prisoners. The Israeli Prime Minister’s office emphasized the critical nature of ongoing negotiations with Hamas, even as military operations continue. Alexander, who was captured during Hamas’s attacks on October 7, 2023, had been held for 583 days. His family celebrated the news as the greatest gift on Mother’s Day, expressing hope for his safe return.

Despite previous setbacks—such as Hamas reneging on a prior agreement for Alexander’s release due to alleged Israeli strikes—U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that negotiations had progressed significantly, enabling Alexander’s imminent release. Trump suggested that this development could signal a broader move towards ending hostilities in Gaza and acknowledged the efforts of mediators from Qatar and Egypt. As diplomatic tensions between Trump and Netanyahu arise regarding strategies for addressing the crisis, further discussions are anticipated in the wake of Alexander’s release.
