Press Release: Newport Man Killed in Collision with Dump Truck; Driver Arrested
Newport, NH – A tragic accident in Newport last week resulted in the death of a 34-year-old local man, Zachary Shepard. The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Central and Sunapee streets.
Shepard was struck by a dump truck driven by 38-year-old Charles Deraway of Grantham. Following the collision, Shepard was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities reported that Deraway has been arrested and now faces felony charges of negligent homicide and second-degree assault. He appeared in court on Monday, although it was unclear if he had legal representation. Police investigations revealed that Deraway failed to stop at a stop sign on Central Street before turning right onto Sunapee Street, where Shepard was in a designated crosswalk.
