Rising Progressive Star Hanna Trudo Moves to NH, Eyes Congressional Run
CONCORD, NH – Hanna Trudo, a liberal journalist and former reporter for major news outlets like Politico and The Daily Beast, has announced her return to New Hampshire with intentions to run in the Democratic primary for the First Congressional District. The move comes in the wake of current Rep. Chris Pappas’s decision to vie for a U.S. Senate seat.
Trudo, a fourth-generation Granite Stater, expressed her commitment to progressive values, stating, “As a Granite Stater, I take our state motto seriously. Under Donald Trump, we are no longer free.” She emphasized the need for Democrats to abandon the pursuit of bipartisanship, advocating for a more aggressive approach to politics.
Trudo’s announcement follows U.S. Rep. Maggie Goodlander, who won her congressional seat last year despite a long absence from her district. Goodlander, similar to Trudo, has faced scrutiny regarding her political roots, particularly given Trudo’s transition from journalism to politics.
In preparation for her potential candidacy, Trudo has crafted a memo outlining her commitment to progressive ideals. She asserts that Democrats must “be better” and has shown support for DNC Vice Chair David Hogg’s efforts to challenge moderate party members in upcoming primaries.
Other candidates, such as Maura Sullivan—an experienced Democratic operative and veteran—have already declared their candidacies. Sullivan has garnered significant endorsements from fellow Democratic veterans, bolstering her traditional campaign stance.
Meanwhile, Stefany Shaheen, daughter of retiring U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, may also join the race, indicating a possible divide between establishment candidates and Trudo’s progressive vision.
Trudo’s leap from journalism to politics has drawn mixed reactions, with critics labeling her choice as indicative of a biased media landscape. Advocates, however, herald her as a refreshing voice for the progressive cause, with one grassroots organizer dubbing her “the first glimmer of hope” for left-leaning voters in New Hampshire.
