Hudson Suicide Prevention Walk Raises Funds for Mental Health Awareness Month

Community Unites for Suicide Prevention Walk in Hudson

In a powerful demonstration of solidarity and awareness, nearly 200 members of the Hudson community participated in a suicide prevention walk on Saturday, as part of Mental Health Awareness Month. The event, organized by Alvirne High School students Amaya Dorsey and Victoria Suppa, aimed to create a supportive environment for those struggling with mental health issues.

Dorsey emphasized the importance of open dialogue, stating, “It shouldn’t be something you feel you’re going to get punished for if you speak out and want to get help. No one is going to make fun of you if you’re struggling.” The event became a platform for participants to share their personal stories and challenges related to mental health.

Also attending was Donna Morin, a teacher at Alvirne High School, whose passion for the cause is deeply personal; she lost her son Nathan to suicide three years ago. “Just knowing how important this was to them and the other students shows that mental health is a vital concern,” she remarked, praising the dedication of the young organizers.

The walk was not just about awareness but also raised approximately $13,000, with all proceeds directed to the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention. As communities come together to address mental health, efforts like these illuminate the path toward healing and support.

For those in need, support is available through the National Suicide Crisis Lifeline at 988.
