Saints QB Derek Carr to Retire Due to Severe Degenerative Issues in Right Shoulder

Derek Carr, the veteran quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, has announced his retirement due to a labral tear in his right shoulder and significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff. At 34 years old, Carr had a notable 11-year career, starting in 2014 with the Oakland Raiders after being drafted from Fresno State. He joined the Saints as a free agent in 2023, but faced challenges, finishing with a 14-13 record as a starter while grappling with injuries that sidelined him for seven games last season.

During the offseason, Carr experienced unexpected shoulder pain while ramping up his training, which led to his recent diagnosis. Although surgery was an option, the team acknowledged that it could jeopardize his 2025 season and may not guarantee a return to his previous level of performance. The Saints had remained silent on his injury until shortly before the draft, and Carr defended himself against critics who questioned the timing of his injury announcement during a sermon in Las Vegas, where he expressed gratitude for his career.

Over his career, Carr threw for 41,245 yards, scored 257 touchdowns, and had 112 interceptions, finishing with a regular-season record of 77-92 and without a playoff victory. In reflection, he shared his thankfulness for the support from teammates, coaches, and fans, emphasizing the blessings of his journey. Carr’s decision comes shortly after the Saints selected quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of the draft, signaling a potential shift in their quarterback strategy, with Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener also on the roster.
