ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — In a significant escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, India launched missiles targeting three air bases in Pakistan, which were largely intercepted, according to a statement from Pakistan’s army spokesperson. This incident follows a gun massacre in India-controlled Kashmir last month, which India attributes to Pakistan.
In response to the missile strikes, Pakistan’s military confirmed that retaliatory attacks were underway, although specific details regarding the targets in India were not disclosed. Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif, the spokesperson, declared that Pakistani air force assets remained secure, noting that some missiles launched by India had also landed within India’s Punjab region.
Sharif characterized the missile attack as a “provocation of the highest order,” outlining that the Indian missiles had struck locations including Nur Khan air base in Rawalpindi, Murid air base in Chakwal, and Rafiqui air base in Jhang. He claimed that while six ballistic missiles were fired from India’s Adampur, one of them hit the same location, with others impacting Amritsar in Indian Punjab.
On the Indian side, military officials reported that drones were observed across various regions bordering Pakistan, and they claimed to have engaged these drones. Meanwhile, tensions have continued to escalate since an assault in Kashmir on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, predominantly Hindu tourists. India accused Pakistan of supporting the attackers, a charge that Pakistan denies. Previous incidents included Indian airstrikes targeting alleged militant sites in Pakistan, resulting in civilian casualties, and conflicting reports on drone and missile activity from both nations. The situation remains highly volatile and is being closely monitored.
