Stratham Students Embrace Health and Wellness Day
Stratham, N.H. — Cooperative Middle School transformed into a hub of activity as students participated in the annual Health and Wellness Day, aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being. The event featured engaging workshops, including outdoor sports, lifeguard training, and creative arts.
Eighth-grader Javier Beltre expressed enthusiasm: "It’s such a great day for students to not be on their phones and just enjoy the outdoors," highlighting the mental health benefits of connecting with nature. Co-founders and teachers Kelly Moss and Kelly O’Neill organized 72 diverse workshops for over 900 students, encouraging disconnection from digital devices and reconnection with peers.
The day offered everything from flag football with the University of New Hampshire’s Wildcats to hands-on science activities with the UNH STEM Mobile. Students also participated in a cleansing ritual that involved casting away negative thoughts. "Health and Wellness Day isn’t just for kids; it helps teachers, too," said counselor Lisa Sloan, noting the importance of this break from the traditional curriculum.
Notable activities included mock lifeguard rescues led by New Hampshire State Beach Patrol Chief Pat Murphy, who emphasized ocean safety. Additionally, students engaged in community service by preparing meals for Exeter’s Community Refrigerator.
With its emphasis on variety and student choice, Health and Wellness Day successfully created a positive environment for both students and teachers, inspiring hopes for similar events at other schools.
