GULLA: Revitalize the Governor’s Budget for Improved Government Efficiency

Press Release: New Hampshire Faces Budget Cuts Threatening Vital Services

CONCORD, NH — New Hampshire stands at a critical crossroads as proposed budget cuts could undermine some of the state’s most essential services. Despite being recognized as one of the most efficiently run state governments in the nation, recent actions by members of the far-right, including Rep. Dan McGuire, threaten to jeopardize this status.

Cutbacks to the Department of Corrections and the elimination of the Arts Council have raised alarms among local leaders. Councilor Janet Stevens highlighted the economic impact of the Arts Council’s removal, noting that Greater Portsmouth’s arts and culture sector generated over $70 million in economic activity in 2022, supporting 1,250 jobs and contributing significantly to local and federal tax revenues.

Moreover, the proposed funding levels for the New Hampshire Public Defender’s office could lead to dire consequences. At $28.8 million, the budget fails to meet the demands of a full caseload, forcing the state to potentially hire private counsel at nearly double the cost of a public defender. This misalignment could lead to an additional $15.6 million expenditure in private legal fees, paradoxically undermining the very efficiency the state prides itself on.

The repercussions extend beyond financial implications; staffing challenges are already emerging with some agencies rescinding job offers due to the budget uncertainty. Public servants dedicated to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of New Hampshire residents deserve better treatment and support.

As the debate unfolds, stakeholders are urging the New Hampshire Senate to reconsider these cuts and restore vital funding, emphasizing the interconnectedness of public services and the community’s welfare. The call is clear: prioritize foundational programs to secure a stable and prosperous future for all Granite Staters.
