Legislators Tour The Nash Casino to Discuss Charitable Gaming Evolution
Nashua, NH – New Hampshire legislators recently embarked on a tour of The Nash Casino, aiming to understand the evolution of charitable gaming in the state. State Rep. Thomas Schamberg described the casino’s approach as promising, highlighting the importance of equitable funding for all charities.
The visit coincides with ongoing legislative discussions surrounding bills that could legalize slot machines or restrict donation limits from casinos. Schamberg emphasized the need for fairness, especially for charities not currently benefiting from casino donations. Around 800 charities annually receive funds, but many have yet to be included in the casino’s donation schedules.
The Nash Casino currently operates approximately 1,000 historical horse racing machines. Proposed changes under Gov. Kelly Ayotte could see these replaced with faster and cheaper slot machines, potentially generating an estimated $128 million for the state and $70 million for charities by the second budget cycle.
Rep. Mary Murphy expressed cautious optimism, suggesting that the shift to slot machines could benefit both the state and charities while highlighting the necessity for responsible gaming measures. Lawmakers noted a concerning increase in calls to the New Hampshire Council on Problem Gambling, with numbers rising from 205 in 2021 to 439 by 2024.
John Janigian, chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, underscored the need for ongoing evaluation of charitable gaming, stating, “It’s a whole new ballgame.” As the landscape rapidly evolves, lawmakers remain committed to ensuring that state revenues do not compromise social welfare.
