Former Governor Chris Sununu Joins Venture Capital Firm After Declining Senate Run
Former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu has opted for a new chapter in his career, announcing that he will not pursue a bid for the U.S. Senate. Instead, the seasoned politician is stepping into the private sector, joining Scope Labs Capital, a venture capital firm based in New York. Sununu will serve on the investment committee alongside former MIT roommate Dave Sukoff and CEO Jack Phifer.
Sununu, who led New Hampshire’s state government for eight years, will help evaluate potential investments in early-stage startups, with an emphasis on companies within Scope Labs’ incubator network and those stemming from notable California accelerator Y Combinator. The firm recently launched its initial $10 million fund and aims to invest in innovative startups designed by graduates from MIT.
In a recent interview, the 50-year-old stated that his focus would shift to family, distancing himself from political roles for the next five to ten years, although he will continue to appear as a political commentator on national news. "It’s about having a break and putting my emphasis on family for now," Sununu explained.
Sukoff praised Sununu’s entry into venture capital, stating, "He adds credibility and gravitas that we might not otherwise have." Their longstanding friendship dates back three decades to their university days, making this collaboration a natural extension of their history together. Sununu’s expertise in government and engineering will play a significant role in guiding investment decisions as the firm navigates the startup landscape.
This part-time role will allow Sununu to work remotely, with occasional trips to the New York office as he explores additional opportunities within corporate boards and private equity.
