A new Disney theme park is set to launch in Abu Dhabi, with the announcement made by the Walt Disney Company on Wednesday. Disney has partnered with Miral, an immersive destination and experiences company, to bring this park and resort to Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates. This will mark Disney’s seventh theme park resort, with development and construction led by Miral, while Disney’s imagineers will oversee creative design and operational aspects. Notably, Disney will not be investing capital but will benefit from the royalties generated by the project.
Disney CEO Bob Iger emphasized the significance of the new park in celebrating the region’s rich culture, stating it will combine modern architecture with advanced technology to create deeply immersive entertainment experiences. Although specific opening dates have not been provided, Iger mentioned that the design process is already underway.
This announcement follows Disney’s successful fiscal second quarter, during which its experiences division reported a 6% revenue growth year-over-year. Over the years, Disney has incrementally entered the UAE market, adding various retail locations and entertainment shows. With one-third of the global population within a four-hour flight from the UAE, the region offers a substantial tourism market of around 500 million potential visitors.
Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney experiences, highlighted that the Abu Dhabi resort will be the most interactive in Disney’s portfolio, enhancing guest experiences with unique storytelling set against a picturesque waterfront location. Yas Island, where the park will be located, already hosts numerous entertainment attractions and amenities, including Ferrari World and Yas Waterworld, positioning it as a vibrant hub of retail and leisure activities. The new Disney park aims to offer themed accommodations and distinctive dining experiences that merge Disney’s storytelling with Abu Dhabi’s cultural essence.
