Ex-Political Journalist Weighs Congressional Bid in New Hampshire

Hanna Trudo Eyes Congressional Bid in New Hampshire

Hanna Trudo, a former senior political correspondent at The Hill, is contemplating a congressional run as a Democrat in New Hampshire’s 1st District following incumbent Rep. Chris Pappas’ Senate campaign announcement. Trudo, a native Granite Stater, confirmed her intentions on X, emphasizing her commitment to the state’s motto, “Live Free or Die.” She criticized the current political climate, asserting that under Donald Trump, freedom has been compromised, and implored Democrats to abandon the quest for bipartisanship in favor of direct action.

In a detailed memo outlining her background, Trudo described her upbringing in Hillsborough County as a child of a single mother who struggled financially yet instilled in her the principles of hard work. Drawing from her experience as a journalist covering Washington D.C., she believes she possesses the necessary tools to challenge the political status quo. "I’m tired of writing about how Democrats keep losing. I know how to beat the odds,” she declared.

Trudo’s potential candidacy adds to the growing list of media figures entering politics, reflecting a broader trend as notable personalities seek to translate their expertise into legislative power. She also signaled a need for new Democratic leadership, declaring, "We don’t need platitudes about reaching across the aisle."

If she pursues the campaign, Trudo will compete against Marine Corps veteran Maura Sullivan, who has been in the race since April, and former Trump White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who previously ran for the seat in 2022. With her last article for The Hill published in early March, Trudo is positioning herself as a fresh, disruptive force within the Democratic Party as she weighs her options.
