UK Investigates Possible Connection Between Two Suspected Iranian State-Sponsored Plots

British authorities are currently investigating two plots linked to predominantly Iranian nationals, which preliminary assessments suggest might be state-sponsored. Over the weekend, eight individuals were arrested across London and other UK regions; seven of them are Iranian nationals. Three were detained under Section 27 of the UK’s 2023 National Security Act, which allows for arrests related to associations with foreign powers.

The two plots, although separate, raise concerns for law enforcement as they explore whether a single entity might be orchestrating both. Initial reports indicated that five men had been arrested under the Terrorism Act for allegedly preparing a terrorist act, with an investigation described as “fast moving.” Although specific targets were not disclosed, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper characterised the investigations as critical counter-state and counterterrorism operations.

Historically, Iranian nationals have posed threats to the UK, particularly targeting Iranian dissidents. The BBC highlighted that the television network Iran International relocated to the US following threats linked to the Iranian regime. A previous plot involved the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps hiring a smuggler to attack two of their journalists, which was thwarted when the smuggler became a double agent.

UK Minister of State, Dan Jarvis, noted that since 2022, there have been 20 Iran-related plots endangering UK citizens, primarily aimed at dissidents and media figures, as well as potential plans against Jewish and Israeli targets—a continuation of Iran’s strategy to suppress dissent through intimidation. As investigations continue, the UK remains vigilant in monitoring threats from Iranian intelligence services.
