Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro Metro Ranks High for Access to Local Food Markets

A recent study by Trace One reveals that the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro area, crossing into both Oregon and Washington, stands as one of the top regions in the U.S. for access to local food markets. It secured the fifth position among large metros, boasting 5.0 farmers markets, on-farm markets, and community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs per 100,000 residents. The area’s total local food market count reaches 126, serving a population of approximately 2.5 million with a median household income of $95,000.

Leading the rankings, the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington area tops the list with 6.9 markets per 100,000 residents. Despite Washington state placing 25th nationally with 3.4 markets per 100,000 residents, its overall need for local food accessibility indicates growing consumer interest in sustainable eating amid rising food prices and shifting grocery habits. Vermont stands out with 20.1 markets per 100,000 residents, followed by Wyoming, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Alaska.

The report highlights the significance of farmers markets and direct-to-consumer outlets as vital elements promoting healthy eating and local economies. Trace One’s Local Food Survey found that around two-thirds of U.S. adults prioritize health in their food choices and are increasingly concerned about the origins of their food.

While consumers show a preference for locally sourced products, price sensitivity persists; many are only willing to pay modest premiums for these items. As the market evolves and seeks to connect with consumers, both access to and education about local food sources are more critical than ever, signaling a shift toward healthier eating habits driven by community engagement.

As Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro continues to foster its reputation in the local food landscape, the importance of accessibility and community support remains foundational to its food culture.
