Purdue University Honors David Byers with Distinguished Technology Alumni Award
West Lafayette, Indiana — Purdue University’s Polytechnic Institute recently celebrated David Byers of Franklin, Indiana, distinguished aviator and Purdue alumnus, by awarding him the prestigious Distinguished Technology Alumni Award during the annual Purdue Technology Appreciation and Alumni Awards ceremony.
A 1985 graduate of Purdue’s Professional Pilot Technology program, Byers has had an illustrious career in aviation, currently serving as a captain for United Airlines. He pilots the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on international routes and boasts an impressive record of over 27,000 flight hours amassed across four decades in the airline industry.
Reflecting on his success, Byers credited Purdue for helping him secure his first airline job, stating, “I owe much of my success to the education and experiences I had as a student in the Professional Pilot Technology program.” His commitment extends beyond the cockpit; he also serves as a quality control check airman for United Airlines, where he is pivotal in mentoring and evaluating fellow pilots, ensuring high standards of aviation safety and training for future aviators.
Back in his hometown, Byers is a trustee at Franklin College, contributing his leadership to the community. Whether attending Purdue football games or skiing in the Alps, he embodies the adventurous spirit and lifelong learning ethos exemplified by Boilermakers.
The Distinguished Technology Alumni Award recognizes Purdue Polytechnic alumni who demonstrate outstanding professional achievement, leadership, and service to their communities. Byers’ multifaceted contributions reflect these values, making him a deserving recipient of this honor.
