Eversource Proposes 17% Rate Increase for New Hampshire Customers
MANCHESTER, N.H. — Eversource Energy has proposed a significant 17% increase in distribution rates for its New Hampshire customers, potentially raising the average annual bill by approximately $260. This request is currently under review by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), with a hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
The utility cites the need for infrastructure maintenance and repair as the primary reason for the increase, noting that the last rate adjustment occurred in 2019. Eversource’s spokesman, William Hinkle, emphasized that the proposal aims to align the cost of maintaining infrastructure with what customers currently pay. The company previously received approval for a temporary rate increase, leading to monthly bills rising nearly $7 compared to the previous year.
If the PUC approves the new request, residents would face an additional charge of around $12 monthly. Consumer advocate Donald Kreis raised concerns about the impact of rising costs, particularly on low-income families who may struggle to manage their expenses.
While the commission is set to hear testimonies, a decision on the rate increase is not anticipated to be made on Tuesday. Should the proposal pass, the new rates would take effect on August 1. Consumers are urged to remain updated on the developments regarding this proposal that could affect household budgets across the state.
