Lawsuit Filed Against New Hampshire’s Transgender Athlete Ban
Concord, NH – Two transgender teenagers, Parker Tirrell, 15, and Iris Turmelle, 14, alongside their families, have initiated a lawsuit against New Hampshire’s education officials over a recently enacted law banning transgender girls from competing in girls’ sports teams at public high schools. The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court, seeks to allow Tirrell to play on the girls’ soccer team and Turmelle to try out for girls’ tennis and track and field teams.
House Bill 1205, signed by Governor Chris Sununu last month, states that only female athletes assigned female at birth may compete on girls’ teams, a move the Governor claims is meant to ensure "fairness and safety" in women’s sports. However, advocacy groups like GLAD and the ACLU of New Hampshire argue that the law discriminates against transgender youth and violates their rights to equal educational opportunities under federal law.
Both teenagers, who are receiving gender-affirming medical care, argue that being excluded from sports would severely impact their mental health and social lives. Tirrell expressed that playing soccer has been a significant source of joy and camaraderie for her, while Turmelle emphasized the importance of sports in forming friendships and fostering inclusion after being bullied in middle school.
The lawsuit emerges amid a larger national debate on transgender athletes, with New Hampshire joining 25 states that have enacted similar bans. In response to recent rulings, such as the one in West Virginia allowing a 13-year-old girl to compete, advocates continue to challenge these controversial laws.
New Hampshire officials, including Governor Sununu and the Attorney General’s Office, have yet to comment on the lawsuit. The case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding gender equality in sports as schools prepare for the upcoming academic year.
