New Mosaic Celebrates Winchester’s Sporting Heritage at the Station

Press Release: Community Mosaic Celebrates Winchester’s Sporting Heritage

Winchester, UK – The much-anticipated community mosaic titled "Winchester – City of Sport" has been unveiled in the pedestrian underpass at the local railway station, marking a significant milestone in a collaborative project initiated by the Winchester Sport Art and Leisure Trust (SALT) in 2019.

The idea for the mosaic originated from SALT, who teamed up with Network Rail and South Western Railway. However, due to various challenges, including delays from the Covid-19 pandemic, the project took several years to secure the necessary approvals. During this time, SALT collaborated with mosaic artist Joanna Dewfall, developing a vibrant design that showcases the diverse sports thriving in Winchester.

In September, Joanna led community workshops at Winchester Rugby Club, engaging 37 local residents in the mosaic creation process. "This project was particularly special as students from my alma mater, the Winchester School of Art, participated," Joanna expressed.

The mosaic was officially unveiled on November 3 by SALT representatives Emma Back and Sue Falconer, along with Joanna and participating residents. Sue praised the extensive support from community partners and emphasized the vital role of volunteers in bringing the project to fruition. “You’ve made this project possible,” she said.

Emma added, “The mosaic beautifully embodies our community spirit and celebrates Winchester’s rich sporting heritage.” Winchester ranks among the most active areas in England, home to historic clubs like the Friary Bowling Club (est. 1820) and Winchester City Football Club (est. 1884).

This project not only commemorates local sports but also paves the way for future mosaic installations throughout Winchester. Residents eager to explore their creative potential can attend Joanna’s workshops, with further details available at dewfallmosaic.co.uk.
