Museum Creates Lego Mobility Aid for Turtle with Missing Foot

Press Release: Museum of Natural History Innovates Turtle Mobility with Custom Lego Aid

Halifax, Nova Scotia – April 28 (UPI) – Staff at the Museum of Natural History in Halifax have developed an innovative mobility aid for a resident wood turtle named Root, using Lego pieces to enhance his walking comfort.

Root arrived at the museum in September from the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park. Animal care specialist Heather McKinnon Ramshaw observed that Root’s missing front right foot resulted in an uneven gait, causing his shell to drag and wear down. "Because one leg is essentially shorter than the other one, we found that he was clunking his shell down," Ramshaw explained. To prevent further damage, it was essential to create a supportive device for Root.

Inspired by a Lego exhibit at the museum, naturalist interpreter Tessa Biesterfeld designed a custom solution. She fashioned a support system using a small dog harness, a Lego platform, and Lego wheels to help lift Root’s shell on the affected side. "We thought that’d be so great because we know it’s non-toxic, we can replace the parts as needed, and it’s very modular," Biesterfeld noted.

Since the implementation of this aid, Root has shown a notable improvement in his enthusiasm for exploration. Biesterfeld remarked, "Now when I snap his harness on, he’s ready to go." The successful project not only demonstrates the creativity of museum staff but also highlights their commitment to animal welfare, ensuring that Root can roam comfortably and enjoyably within the museum’s exhibits.
