Cricket in Manchester: A Beautiful Sport Gaining Momentum

Press Release: Cricket Takes Center Stage in Manchester’s Prout Park

Manchester, NH – This past weekend, the sounds of cheering crowds and swinging bats resonated through Prout Park as the city hosted its second annual New Hampshire Cricket Tournament. Dozens of players from Manchester and beyond came together to showcase their skills, marking a significant step for the sport’s growing popularity in the area.

Kamal Maharjan, a player for Manchester Cricket Club (MCC) and a native of Nepal, expressed his excitement, noting the increasing participation in local tournaments. “It’s a great feeling to see cricket flourishing,” he said. Manchester is now home to four organized teams: MCC, Sherpa United, Kaizen, and Murraa Brothers, who competed against teams from Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts.

The matches, reminiscent of baseball, featured players bowling to batters who then ran between wickets. Spectators cheered enthusiastically as players scored six-run boundaries, while food offerings from local Nepalese restaurant Dancing Yeti enhanced the festive atmosphere.

Organized by Manish Humagain of MCC, the tournament attracted Mayor Jay Ruais, who helped kick-off the event. Humagain emphasized the communal spirit cricket brings to participants, stating, “Cricket is like a religion in Nepal,” and expressed hopes to expand interest in the sport throughout New Hampshire.

Excitement was palpable among players like Naran Gurung of Murraa Brothers, who advocated for better cricket infrastructure in the city, suggesting the need for dedicated pitches. “We hope the city takes our request into consideration,” he remarked.

As cricket continues to gain traction in Manchester, the tournament serves as a reminder of the vibrant community spirit fostered through sports. The organizers aim to make the event an annual tradition, with aspirations of attracting teams from even further afield.
