Padel Popularity Sparks Noise Complaints in Hampshire Suburb
Winchester, Hampshire – Padel, recognized as the fastest-growing sport globally, faces challenges in an upscale Hampshire neighborhood due to noise complaints from residents living near the Winchester Racquets and Fitness (WRF) club. Homeowners in the affluent area, characterized by £1 million properties, have raised concerns about the disruptive sound of padel balls striking glass panels and fences, likening it to gunfire.
The long-established WRF, which opened in 1910, currently offers three padel courts for its members, who pay an annual fee of £161. However, the club recently informed its members that the Winchester City Council is expected to serve a noise abatement notice due to these complaints. Increasing interest in padel prompted the club to propose additional courts last year, resulting in significant pushback from nearby residents.
Peter Russell, a 75-year-old homeowner living just 3.5 meters from the tennis courts, expressed his dissatisfaction, indicating a willingness to escalate the issue to the Supreme Court if necessary. He stated that the noise impacts both the property’s value and the quality of life in their garden. Other residents, like John Colley, are also frustrated, citing not only the loud sounds from the rackets but also shouting and inappropriate language from players.
Despite receiving a noise assessment from the council confirming the issue, WRF remains committed to expanding its padel offerings while addressing noise control. The club has not yet received an official notice but anticipates one in the coming weeks, giving them a six-month period to demonstrate compliance with noise regulations. As the sport continues to grow in popularity, finding a balance between enjoyment and community peace remains a pressing challenge for WRF and its neighbors.
